Outdoor Learning @ Beacon Primary

5th November 2021Mr Barnes

As usual, the children at Beacon Primary have taken part in lots of outdoor learning activities during lesson time and also during breaks and lunch times.

This week, Red Class looked at man-made and natural materials, read in the wooden chair, practiced handwriting and consolidated the whole part method in maths.

During breaks and lunch times they put out the fireworks when thinking about firework safety, investigated measurement in the water trays, worked together to build dens and got physical taking part in an obstacle course and slide.

What a great way to learn, Red Class!

This week Yellow Class brought the outdoors inside and explored art and design using different objects from around the school to create some fantastic texture prints.

Lucas, Jack and James mixed autumnal colours using the paint, compared results and gave feedback to each other about their work.

Well done Yellow Class!

At Primary, outdoor learning is part of the timetable across the whole curriculum.
This week Blue Class have used the outdoor area to help identify different materials in Science.

They used natural objects to help check if mathematical statements are true or false. Millie and Malaki represented ‘tens’ with larger objects like leaves and ‘ones’ with smaller objects like shells or stones.

Today they have uncovered common exception words in the sand area, and practiced writing them and putting them into sentences with chalk.

Great job Blue Class!

Beacon Primary Bowling

1st October 2021Mr Barnes

On Thursday 30th September the children at Beacon Primary were incredibly lucky to be invited to an inter-school bowling tournament, which was arranged by our friends at Panathlon. The children were absolute superstars.

They were winners of the tournament and their behaviour was so good that other schools complimented our staff. #TeamBeacon

MacMillan Coffee Morning @ Beacon Primary

24th September 2021Mr Barnes

Primary had an amazing turnout for their MacMillan coffee afternoon on Thursday.
Lots of parents and carers, our friends from Asda, secondary pupils and staff, and even governors attended.

School Council were very impressive hosts and our children manned their stalls professionally.
Thanks to everyone’s generous donations we were even able to have a raffle and guess the weight of the cake competition. Overall, we raised a whopping £65!
Thank you to everyone for making it such a special event.

Sporting Celebration at Beacon Primary

21st June 2021Mr Barnes

Celebration Assembly
Last week’s celebration assembly was made all the better because all of our children were lucky enough to receive a certificate of participation from Panathlon.
Apparently, not every school receives these so we are incredibly proud of our pupils.

Bug Club

7th May 2021Mr Barnes

Important Announcement!

As you know, reading is our whole school focus as it is central to the children being able to access learning across the curriculum.

From Monday 10th May, the primary children *will not* be bringing a book home and will be expected to use Bug Club instead. This saves staff ‘COVID quarantining’ books from home.

All of the primary children have logins, and know how to use the system.

Please support your child’s learning by encouraging them to spend 15 minutes on Bug Club every night. We will monitor use and reward children on a Friday if they do this.

Let us know if you have any difficulties accessing the system or issues with connectivity.

As always, thank you for your support.

Why we like the Beacon!

12th February 2021Mr Barnes

Staff and students have been thinking about what they like about The Beacon Centre. From the amazing Staff team we have to the school’s dogs or the relationships between staff and young people.

Sometimes it’s great to take a minute to be grateful for the things that make you feel happy, in our case it’s being like a family and creative a supportive and caring environment for staff and young people.

We are so proud of all of our staff and young people. We strive to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to achieve all they can and that everyone is able to be the best “them” that they can be….. Most of all…. “We are family!”

Sledging at Primary

10th February 2021Mr Barnes

Thanks to the Christmas fundraising raffle, Beacon Primary were able to buy some new sledges… Just in time for all the snow!

Children have been able to demonstrate soft skills of team work, turn taking and, consideration.

No learning opportunity was missed either, with young people and staff discussing forces, mass and velocity.

It was great to see all of the children getting stuck in and having a great time in the snow!

What’s the benefit? Where’s the value?

Not only is sledging a fantastic form of exercise for children, repeatedly climbing up the slopes, the fact children have fun doing it is motivation to exercise for longer.

Sledging also helps to improve our endurance levels, cardiovascular fitness and total body strength, all that lugging up the hills and trudging through the snow. It also encourages core stability and control during the descent.

Getting up from falling off demonstrates skills in resilience as well as further developing all the large muscle groups.

Being outside in general, but especially in winter, boosts the heart rate, refreshes the mind and helps to calm children through the day.
