Roald Dahl Day @ Primary

16th September 2022Mr Barnes

Primary are celebrating Roald Dahl Day today, and don’t we know it?!
We have Matildas, witches (they hide in plain sight, so can look just like ordinary people), BFGs and The Twits in school today.
Mrs Simpson, our English lead, has worked with staff to develop a day of Dahl themed learning and activities to look forward to including a treasure hunt, reading tasks, fine motor skills activities and lots of cooking to develop D&T, reading and Maths knowledge.
Our RESPECT values of teamwork, communication and excellence will also be demonstrated throughout the day.

Outdoor Learning @ Primary

7th September 2022Mr Barnes

At primary, outdoor learning is a large part of our day. We have continuous provision and offer a range of adult led activities on a lunchtime.
Everyone – especially the staff – have had a great time today with the parachute!
Our children (and adults) have played a variety of games, taken turns, followed instructions and waited patiently.

They have also practiced counting, gross motor skills and rhyming while they’ve played, and practiced fractions and teamwork when they folded the parachute away.
Great job everyone!

The pupils at our primary school are thrilled to have earned this fabulous silver award from The British Ecological Society for their work in the ‘Connecting Schools to Nature’ project.
Mrs Dixon led the project, and is already working towards the gold award.
Well done everyone!

Commando Joe’s @ Primary

24th June 2022Mr Barnes

Commando Joe’s Outdoor Learning

Primary pupils consolidated their learning of forces to understand how to fill the water canons in outdoor learning. They then completed one of the Commando Joe’s RESPECT tasks – Cross the Swamp – demonstrating the Commando Joe value of ‘teamwork’ to earn water balloons. Any wrong answers meant that the teacher team got the balloon.

After that, all children listened carefully to the safety rules around wet play, before having a whale of a time in pupils v adults!

Teamwork is our Commando Joe’s value of the week, so please let us know if your child shows teamwork outside of school to earn Commando Joe extra ClassDojo points.

Jubilee Jambouree!

27th May 2022Mr Barnes

Parents, carers, members of our school’s wider community, governors and SIAs joined together with our primary children today for a fun filled day of celebration.
Staff worked tirelessly to prepare our school with decorations that the children had made.
Our children shared their learning in an assembly, sang their jubilee song and even had a crown parade!
After that, everyone made some jubilee mementos including kites, decorative magnets and commemorative plates. We even had face painting.
The children had worked hard all week to plan and prepare a delicious celebratory meal, which everyone enjoyed.
The day was rounded off with every primary pupil being awarded a commemorative Platinum Jubilee medal.
Feedback from all of our guests was that everyone had a great time. For some of our families, this was the first time that their child had been involved in a school production or taken part in an assembly which made the day even more special.

Outdoor Learning at Primary

29th April 2022Mr Barnes

This week Blue class have been using the outdoor learning area to practise their phonics. Millie could write all the words independently. In Geography the children had to uncover a landmark from the UK and locate it on a map. They also looked at the difference between human and physical features.

Primary Experiential Learning

5th April 2022Mr Barnes

Every Monday our pupils have ‘Experiential Learning’ where learning comes to life for them. This week the pupils visited The Angel of The North. This linked to the sculpture topic of last term and also provided an eggcellent (see what I did there?) opportunity to practice egg rolling as part of their Faith Fortnight learning about Easter and its traditions. Red Class recreated The Angel of The North from photographs and recounted their trip to show their recount and sequencing skills and knowledge. What a fantastic week Red Class are having- great job!

Remembrance Day

11th November 2021Mr Barnes

Primary have been learning about Remembrance Day,  its importance and what it means to children and young people today. Art club created a picture to display outside of school, to show that we remember. They painted the background after reading ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae and linked the project to prior learning about plastic waste by adding poppies made from recycled bottle tops too.

What a fantastic project, art club.

Friday’s at Beacon Primary

8th November 2021Mr Barnes

Every Friday afternoon, Mrs Dixon leads outdoor learning which develops our children’s ‘soft’ skills such as instruction following, resilience, listening, turn-taking and evaluating.
On Friday, the children learned how to tie poles together for building dens. The children worked as part of a team to travel across the ‘swamp’ to exchange some den building equipment with a different team.
After the children had completed the ‘swamp challenge’ they worked as a large group to start building a den and evaluated how well they worked together.
The children described each other as good listeners, good communicators, helpful and good at sharing and taking turns.
Bear Grylls has nothing on Beacon Primary!
