Primary are celebrating Roald Dahl Day today, and don’t we know it?! We have Matildas, witches (they hide in plain sight, so can look just like ordinary people), BFGs and The Twits in school today. Mrs Simpson, our English lead, has worked with staff to develop a day of Dahl themed learning and activities to look forward to including a treasure hunt, reading tasks, fine motor skills activities and lots of cooking to develop D&T, reading and Maths knowledge. Our RESPECT values of teamwork, communication and excellence will also be demonstrated throughout the day.
Meet Beacon Primary’s latest recruit! CJ arrived this week to celebrate our Commando Joe’s ‘Value of the Week’ winners. Commando Joe’s RESPECT programme supports our whole school’s behaviour management, growth-mindset development and life skills education. Every week we choose a Commando Joe value that we look to see our pupils demonstrate.
The values are: Resilience, Empathy, Self awareness, Positivity, Excellence, Communication, Teamwork. The weekly winners have CJ as an extra pupil in their class all week, sharing their learning. For more information visit www.commandojoes.co.uk
Parents, carers, members of our school’s wider community, governors and SIAs joined together with our primary children today for a fun filled day of celebration. Staff worked tirelessly to prepare our school with decorations that the children had made. Our children shared their learning in an assembly, sang their jubilee song and even had a crown parade! After that, everyone made some jubilee mementos including kites, decorative magnets and commemorative plates. We even had face painting. The children had worked hard all week to plan and prepare a delicious celebratory meal, which everyone enjoyed. The day was rounded off with every primary pupil being awarded a commemorative Platinum Jubilee medal. Feedback from all of our guests was that everyone had a great time. For some of our families, this was the first time that their child had been involved in a school production or taken part in an assembly which made the day even more special.
This has been quite an eventful half term, considering it has also been a relatively short one! From the start of GCSE season to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations it has been all systems go at both Beacon Centre sites!
The Word!
Primary pupils visited The Word. They listened to stories read by the librarian, and learnt how the books were organised and where they could find extra information on the things they love!
Bowling
Our KS2 pupils took part in another inter-school bowling tournament organised by our wonderful friends at Panathlon today. 11 schools took part and we came in third place winning bronze medals and another trophy to add to our collection. 2/3 of our team scored over 100 so will be getting an extra ‘100 Club Member’ certificate too. All of the children were fabulous ambassadors for the school. They demonstrated teamwork and resilience, excellent manners and sportsmanship.
Primary Love Bowling!
Everyone needs a little help sometimes.
Jubilee
Young people from both Beacon Centre sites took part in a fantastic Jubilee party including quizzes, afternoon tea and garden games. God Save the Queen!
Jubilee in the Community!
As part of the wider celebrations for the Queen Jubilee, young people along with Miss Brennan donated saplings to a local primary school!
Outdoor Learning
Having examined the nature of shelters in different habitats and the ability of animals to camouflage into their surroundings, young people were challenged to build a hidden shelter, can you spot them?
A note from me!
It has been fantastic to see the young people at our school once again pulling together and showing everyone what they can achieve. They have made a fantastic start to their GCSE exams, those year 6’s who completed their SATs did so in a way that they should be proud of.
At the Beacon Centre we are always proud of our young people and eager to show off what they can achieve when they believe in themselves. I hope you will join me in congratulating them all on an amazing half term.
This week Blue class have been using the outdoor learning area to practise their phonics. Millie could write all the words independently. In Geography the children had to uncover a landmark from the UK and locate it on a map. They also looked at the difference between human and physical features.
Animal magic in Red Class today! The children are learning about mammals, and have set up their very own wildlife camera in the school garden to see which mammals roam there when we aren’t looking. Jake’s saltdough mouse and Blake’s hedgehog are the mammals they hope to see. Using saltdough also helps to develop fine and gross motor skills which helps coordination. We maximise every learning opportunity here at Beacon Primary.
As usual, the children at Beacon Primary have taken part in lots of outdoor learning activities during lesson time and also during breaks and lunch times.
This week, Red Class looked at man-made and natural materials, read in the wooden chair, practiced handwriting and consolidated the whole part method in maths.
During breaks and lunch times they put out the fireworks when thinking about firework safety, investigated measurement in the water trays, worked together to build dens and got physical taking part in an obstacle course and slide.
What a great way to learn, Red Class!
This week Yellow Class brought the outdoors inside and explored art and design using different objects from around the school to create some fantastic texture prints.
Lucas, Jack and James mixed autumnal colours using the paint, compared results and gave feedback to each other about their work.
Well done Yellow Class!

At Primary, outdoor learning is part of the timetable across the whole curriculum. This week Blue Class have used the outdoor area to help identify different materials in Science.
They used natural objects to help check if mathematical statements are true or false. Millie and Malaki represented ‘tens’ with larger objects like leaves and ‘ones’ with smaller objects like shells or stones.
Today they have uncovered common exception words in the sand area, and practiced writing them and putting them into sentences with chalk.
On Thursday 30th September the children at Beacon Primary were incredibly lucky to be invited to an inter-school bowling tournament, which was arranged by our friends at Panathlon. The children were absolute superstars.
They were winners of the tournament and their behaviour was so good that other schools complimented our staff. #TeamBeacon
You may have noticed something different at Beacon Primary today?!
It’s Roald Dahl Day We have children wearing Roald Dahl’s favourite colour and lots of fantastic characters…see if you can name them all!
Blue Class have been using weight, capacity, time and halving in maths today to make Bruce Bogtrotter’s chocolate cake. What a great way to apply maths knowledge!
We’ve even got to clean Mr Twit’s food-filled beard as a fine motor activity. What a whoppsy-whiffling day!
Northumbria Police have stated that they “are receiving reports throughout the Force area from residents and retailers around a number of schools concerning large groups of young people gathering in breach of the ‘Rule of 6’ restrictions.”
We would like to remind students at The Beacon Centre that gatherings of more than 6 people outside of a work or educational setting are prohibited under new COVID19 restrictions.
