Primary are celebrating Roald Dahl Day today, and don’t we know it?! We have Matildas, witches (they hide in plain sight, so can look just like ordinary people), BFGs and The Twits in school today. Mrs Simpson, our English lead, has worked with staff to develop a day of Dahl themed learning and activities to look forward to including a treasure hunt, reading tasks, fine motor skills activities and lots of cooking to develop D&T, reading and Maths knowledge. Our RESPECT values of teamwork, communication and excellence will also be demonstrated throughout the day.
Staff and pupils from our Primary School paid their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by signing the book of condolence at South Shields Town Hall today.
The pupils were excellent ambassadors for the school, showing the greatest respect for The Queen and demonstrating thoughtful behaviour towards members of the public who were also paying their respects and using their manners.
School Council arranged to return on Friday to lay some flowers at the statue of Queen Victoria.
At primary, outdoor learning is a large part of our day. We have continuous provision and offer a range of adult led activities on a lunchtime. Everyone – especially the staff – have had a great time today with the parachute! Our children (and adults) have played a variety of games, taken turns, followed instructions and waited patiently.
They have also practiced counting, gross motor skills and rhyming while they’ve played, and practiced fractions and teamwork when they folded the parachute away. Great job everyone!
Meet Beacon Primary’s latest recruit! CJ arrived this week to celebrate our Commando Joe’s ‘Value of the Week’ winners. Commando Joe’s RESPECT programme supports our whole school’s behaviour management, growth-mindset development and life skills education. Every week we choose a Commando Joe value that we look to see our pupils demonstrate.
The values are: Resilience, Empathy, Self awareness, Positivity, Excellence, Communication, Teamwork. The weekly winners have CJ as an extra pupil in their class all week, sharing their learning. For more information visit www.commandojoes.co.uk
Red class have been on a visit to St Mary’s island. They have been reading the books ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’, which is all about looking after the wildlife in our sea and ‘Sharing a Shell’, which is all about the creatures in our rockpools. The whole class behaved beautifully and followed all instructions about water safety. They all listened carefully about why they had to wear suitable clothing, and helped each other swap into their wellies. Everyone had a great time seeing the seals swimming and climbing on the rocks. They then carefully had a look in the rock pools and were thrilled when they found carbs, hermit crabs, shrimps and fish.
At the Beacon Centre we strive to educate the whole young person, giving them access to life opportunities that might otherwise not be available to them. We are proud of the work we do with our young people and of the work they do. Here are some photos of some of the amazing things that have happened this term!
Every Monday our pupils have ‘Experiential Learning’ where learning comes to life for them. This week the pupils visited The Angel of The North. This linked to the sculpture topic of last term and also provided an eggcellent (see what I did there?) opportunity to practice egg rolling as part of their Faith Fortnight learning about Easter and its traditions. Red Class recreated The Angel of The North from photographs and recounted their trip to show their recount and sequencing skills and knowledge. What a fantastic week Red Class are having- great job!
Primary have been learning about Remembrance Day, its importance and what it means to children and young people today. Art club created a picture to display outside of school, to show that we remember. They painted the background after reading ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae and linked the project to prior learning about plastic waste by adding poppies made from recycled bottle tops too.
Every Friday afternoon, Mrs Dixon leads outdoor learning which develops our children’s ‘soft’ skills such as instruction following, resilience, listening, turn-taking and evaluating. On Friday, the children learned how to tie poles together for building dens. The children worked as part of a team to travel across the ‘swamp’ to exchange some den building equipment with a different team. After the children had completed the ‘swamp challenge’ they worked as a large group to start building a den and evaluated how well they worked together. The children described each other as good listeners, good communicators, helpful and good at sharing and taking turns. Bear Grylls has nothing on Beacon Primary!
As usual, the children at Beacon Primary have taken part in lots of outdoor learning activities during lesson time and also during breaks and lunch times.
This week, Red Class looked at man-made and natural materials, read in the wooden chair, practiced handwriting and consolidated the whole part method in maths.
During breaks and lunch times they put out the fireworks when thinking about firework safety, investigated measurement in the water trays, worked together to build dens and got physical taking part in an obstacle course and slide.
What a great way to learn, Red Class!
This week Yellow Class brought the outdoors inside and explored art and design using different objects from around the school to create some fantastic texture prints.
Lucas, Jack and James mixed autumnal colours using the paint, compared results and gave feedback to each other about their work.
Well done Yellow Class!

At Primary, outdoor learning is part of the timetable across the whole curriculum. This week Blue Class have used the outdoor area to help identify different materials in Science.
They used natural objects to help check if mathematical statements are true or false. Millie and Malaki represented ‘tens’ with larger objects like leaves and ‘ones’ with smaller objects like shells or stones.
Today they have uncovered common exception words in the sand area, and practiced writing them and putting them into sentences with chalk.
Great job Blue Class!
