Gardening at the Beacon Centre

Students in The Green Room have been learning how to plant seeds for winter vegetables.

Over 100 seeds were planted including carrot, sprouts, leeks, parsnip, spinach and swede.

We are hoping to have a bumper crop to use in the school in a few months.

What’s in the News?

11th September 2019Neaera Warren

‘What’s in the News’ is a new topic in The Green Room where students browse various news websites and conduct some in-depth research into a story that catches their eye.

Students complete a piece of work to summarise the main parts of the story and once completed, the students discuss the stories that they have researched.

Opening of The Beacon Centre Co-op

1st August 2019Neaera Warren

Thursday 1st August 2019

Today The Beacon Centre proudly welcomed Les Old and Steven Varty from the Co-op for the grand opening of our very own mock Co-op store set to tackle knife crime and antisocial behaviour in South Tyneside.

  • Les Old from the Co-op
  • Kelly Hudson and Les Old
  • Councillor Alan Kerr cutting the ribbon
  • Grand opening

The Beacon Centre have chosen to receive a brand new learning zone. This looks and works like a real shop, however, it is a ‘Mocked up shop’. The resource will give students the opportunity to work on a number of education and social scenarios, including budgeting money, finance and anti-social behaviour. We look forward to the students accessing this new learning zone.

  • The front of the shop
  • The tills
  • Self-service tills
  • Selection of frozen and household goods
  • Selction of drinks

Some staff members came into school, some bringing their own children with them to celebrate the opening of the store. This gave them the opportunity to explore the shop and have a go on the till.
