Health and Social Care – Understanding Barriers

27th June 2019Neaera Warren

In Health and Social Care lessons this week, Mrs Graham worked with the students to provide them with an understanding of the barriers that individuals face when they have mobility issues.

Students used crutches around the school building to understand the issues that users of crutches face on a daily basis.

Students really enjoyed this task and at first, thought it was really easy, however, students then understood that opening doors and holding items was rather difficult. This enabled students to understand some of the frustrations that users of crutches face.

Year 11 Celebration Day – 26.06.19

26th June 2019Neaera Warren

Quad Biking – Wednesday 26th June 2019

To celebrate our year 11 students leaving school, Mrs Johnson arranged a day to remember; Tim from Vision for Education generously paid for the students to go quad biking at Broom House Farm, followed by a McDonalds for lunch.

We got ready into our overalls, helmet and gloves. We then had a health and safety talk followed by an explanation of how to operate the quad bikes.

We begun by riding on a field, driving round, up and down over hills.  We rode in a line following the instructor.  This was a perfect way to get used to safely driving the quad bikes.

When everyone felt confident with the use of the quad bikes, we went off rode into the forest, riding over tree trunks, bricks, through ditches, as well as up and down hills.

Gardening at Primary

18th June 2019Neaera Warren

In Primary this term, Class 3 have been growing their own vegetables and herbs.

We’ve thoroughly enjoyed the process from choosing our seeds to planting and watering, to ultimately picking and tasting.  Here we are harvesting our first crops of radishes.  We had mixed reactions from our tasting “ Ummm really tasty, much better than from the shops!” “Hot, hot, hot!” Ultimately we all agreed choosing, planting and growing our own food has been a great experience we would all love to continue.

We are already making plans to expand our growing potential for next year by creating our own vegetable beds.

To celebrate the end of our outdoor learning activity days, our students were given the opportunity to go to ‘Jump Giants’.

Staff and students had fun jumping on the trampolines, jumping into foam blocks as well as  carrying out somersaults and backflips.  They also enjoyed having a go on the obstacle course, playing dodgeball, shooting basketballs into the nets, and what appeared to be the most fun, competing against each other on the gladiator challenge.

Outdoor Activity to Newcastle

17th June 2019Neaera Warren

On the morning of Monday 17th June 2019, the students in secondary were taken on a visit to Newcastle to see the Sage, the opening of the Millennium Bridge and also to take photos of the surrounding scenery.

The students enjoyed watching the Millennium Bridge open for the boat to pass through.  They then walked over the bridge and had fun in the ‘beach setup’.

What happened next caused Mrs Graham and Mrs Warren to be extremely proud of the students.  After walking over the bridge, the students noticed some homeless people sitting at the side of the path.  Molly gave them her last £1 and then Mrs Graham generously purchased food items, which the students handed over to the people.  This was a priceless moment to hear the positive comments from the students of how good they felt for what they had done.

Staff and students then enjoyed lunch on the grass which involved making their own wraps, followed by waffles, cream and strawberries!
