Wednesday 12th February 2020

Today a small group of students went to Scotland. We passed through sun, snow and rain before getting to Scotland and it was awfully windy. Students took photos of the Welcome to Scotland sing, spoke to some local Scottish folk and played journey bingo on the drive.

Tuesday 11th February 2020

Students explored our local coastline in Seaham today. Students were fascinated when they found a crab, the students were amazed at how along the beach the cliffs had little waterfalls and were creating large puddles that were interesting colours. Students played games with the bat and ball and walked at a quick pace the whole time increasing their heart rate and providing good exercise.

Tips to Keep Children Safe Online

5th February 2020Neaera Warren

Wednesday 5th February 2020

10 tips to keep children safe online:

  1. Only talk to people you know and trust in real life
  2. Don’t give away personal information to strangers – like what street you live on, or where you go to school. Say “no” if they ask you to share photos or videos of yourself
  3. Set your profiles to private
  4. Be ‘share aware’ – once you share something online, you’ve got no control over what anyone else does with it. And it’s illegal to take, share or view sexual images of under-18s, full stop
  5. Be mindful of your digital footprint – it could come back to bite you
  6. If you see something upsetting, or someone bullies you, tell an adult you trust
  7. Don’t assume everything you see is true to life. People often make their lives look more exciting online
  8. Watch out for hoaxes and scams, like messages you’re asked to pass on or that as you for payment details or passwords
  9. Be wary of schemes that promise easy cash in return for you receiving and transferring money, and don’t be fooled by anything that glamorises gang lifestyles
  10. Watch out for loot boxes or other ways that games get you to pay – before you know it you can spend a lot on them

Knife Talk at The Sage

3rd February 2020Neaera Warren

Monday 3rd February 2020

Students were invited to HMS Calliope in Gateshead for a talk with ‘Samantha’s Legacy’.

The Beacon Centre were the first people to receive this talk from ‘Samantha’s Legacy’. Samantha was sadly stabbed in 2007 by a 15 year old girl. Samantha had become a mum 4 months before she was killed. Samantha’s mum, Alison and sister Carly spoke to the students to raise awareness and try to prevent knife crime. Northumbria police were in attendance at the event also speaking to the students about the increase in knife offences in our local area.

The students were then invited to the Knife Angel statue outside the Sage. This statue is made up of 100,000 knives that have been taken off the streets in the UK. Some students were amazed at the size of some of the knives that have been confiscated.

One student said, “What an inspirational story!”

Another student said, “That has taken some courage to get up and talk to us about this incident well done!”

In Art, the students in The Green Room have been using different materials and tools to create fish. The students decided that clay and a range of buttons would work best and I have to agree.
