Bonfire Night and Darker Nights Safety

Bonfire Night and Darker Nights Safety

Parents, our school has been working closely with Police and other partners in the lead up to Halloween and Bonfire Night, this is to ensure that everyone enjoys this period safely. Police Officers have been in attendance in all schools in the area speaking to students & making them aware whilst this time is full of excitement, it can also be a frightening period for other members of the community .

In previous years the school has worked with the Police with teachers going out on patrol to provide support and engage with youths who they are familiar with .  This is something we will be replicating this year with the concerns of our students paramount as always.

Please advise your child to enjoy this period but to also be considerate to the local community as Police will be enforcing the law around antisocial behaviour.

Relationship Building and Developing Social Skills

21st October 2019Neaera Warren

Monday 21st October 2019

The students at The Beacon Centre were divided into groups to take part in different activities with the general public as a way for students and staff to further develop positive relationships and to aid on their social skills.

This was a fantastic opportunity for staff and students to work on important life skills in a fun way.

Group 1 travelled to Newton Aycliff to play bowling and have a go at roller-skating.

The students took their go at bowling and did well waiting for their turns. They encouraged each other and chatted between their turns.

The students really enjoyed having a go at roller-skating although they did find it much harder than expected so some spend a lot of time on the floor!

Westoe Crown Primary Visits The Beacon Centre COOP

18th October 2019Neaera Warren

On Friday 18th October 2019, Westoe Crown Primary came to visit The Beacon Centre.

The Beacon Centre welcomed students from year 4, with their teacher, to have a shopping experience in The  COOP. The students started by discussing what type of products they would need to buy from a shop.

The students were given the opportunity to go into the shop to look around and then chosen to select an item, take it to the till to scan and print off the receipt.

The students really enjoyed this.

The students were then separated into two groups; one group did a written activity while the other group did an activity in the COOP.

The written activity involved working in twos to work out what sort of products they would need to buy from a shop.

This particular student was very shocked that she spend over her £10 budget!

These 2 students were the £10 challenge winners as their shopping totalled exactly £10!

The next challenge the students faced was to plan a shop to cater for breakfast, lunch, tea, a snack as well as hygiene products. This time they had a £20 budget. The task involved looking at the prices of the products and using their estimating skills to see who could get the closest to a £20 spend.

Whilst in the COOP, the students also had the opportunity to view the CCTV footage.

All of the students from Westoe Crown Primary School enjoyed their time at The Beacon Centre COOP.

Student feedback:

Student 1: “It’s been really fun because I never really get to go to the shops by myself and get what I want.”

Lucy: “Thank you for giving up your time for us to come to your shop, I had an amazing time!”

Robyn: “I loved how the shop looked just like a real shop!”

Kofi: “I really looked seeing how the CCTV cameras worked!”

Joshua: “I really liked getting a real receipt!”

Ayhan: “I liked the teachers we met at the Beacon Centre!”

‘Ava: “I liked that everything was real in the shop!”

The Beacon Centre staff would like to say a big thank you to all of the students from Westoe Crown Primary school for their positive behaviour, attitudes and for having excellent manners.

We would also like to say thank you to Caden, who assisted in the shop and even stayed in school after finishing time so that he could help for the entire activity!
