KS3 Curriculum Rationale

At The Beacon Centre, throughout the curriculum, our aim is to develop students’
resilience, communication and team work, with an aim of building self-esteem and
confidence to help students overcome barriers.

In Key Stage 3, The Beacon Centre is not intended to offer a placement that is a
long term alternative to mainstream or special education. Our aim is to provide a
short term provision which seeks to support all those involved in securing a
successful transition into the most appropriate educational setting for the individual,
whether it be returning back to mainstream or a more specialised provision.

Pupils access the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and PSHE with
the opportunity of to experience a wide range of other subjects such as cooking
skills, art, enterprise and P.E.

KS4 Curriculum Rationale

At The Beacon Centre, throughout the curriculum, our aim is to develop students’
resilience, communication and team work, with an aim of building self-esteem and
confidence to help students overcome barriers.

Throughout Years 10 and 11 we offer a varied and structured curriculum with a focus
on individuals achieving their very best in GCSE or equivalent subjects.  Students
mainly concentrate on Maths, English and Science but this is supplemented by other
subjects appropriate to the particular learner.  The programmes studied are bespoke
in order to get the most from all.

We always attempt to develop previously studied courses with KS4 students who
come to us part way through an academic year but we cannot guarantee to match
the programmes that they have previously been on.
Our current Curriculum offer contains:

*  GCSE Maths
*  GCSE English
*  GCSE Literature
*  GCSE Science
*  GCSE Art
* GCSE Citizenship
* BTEC Home Cooking Skills

At The Beacon Centre, we offer students in Key Stage 4 the opportunity to gain a
